Pulling hairs just short of breaking them or plucking hairs can stimulate new growth, though its effects are not very impressive.

Such powerful skin irritants as cayenne pepper or, even more powerful and effective, dinitrochlorobenzene or dinitrochlorophenol, often cause hair regrowth when rubbed into the scalp. This is probably at least partly due to histamine release, which stimulates cell division. Experiment on yourself
with pepper, if you wish, but do not self-administer the other two compounds, which can be very dangerous if misused.

A hair growth stimulating compound that is apparently often effective has been reported by reputable scientists to cause an average of 60 percent hair regrowth in just six months of daily use in many people. This material is approved by the FDA as a shampoo surfactant and direct food additive
(as an emulsifier, an agent which can cause water and fat phases to mix). This chemical is called polysorbate 80 (Tween-80®, Atlas ICI) and its close relative polysorbate 60 (Tween-60®, Atlas-ICI) and is commonly found in mayonnaise, salad dressings, and a few liquid detergents.

Unfortunately, despite its very low toxicity and its reported frequent partial effectiveness against balding, the companies offering this chemical cannot sell it for this purpose. If they did, the FDA could take them to court because they did not file a new drug application, requiring tens of millions of dollars and many years to get approval for use against balding. The FDA has not approved polysorbate 80 or polysorbate 60 for use on balding heads, and hence few people have been able to take advantage of this safe and sometimes effective treatment for baldness.

Polysorbate 80 and polysorbate 60 work in at least two or three different ways. They remove dihydrotestosterone and cholesterol from the scalp. They release histamine (a growth factor). They also probably affect the control of genetic activities in the hair follicle cells since they are able to reverse some of the early tissue disorganization which occurs at the start of some chemically induced cancers. Theoretically, part of the molecule (called a polyoxyethylene chain) should interact with the nucleo-proteins which regulate genetic activity.

If you have access to polysorbate 80 or 60, use it in this manner: Coat the scalp in the bald or balding areas with a thin film of material five or ten minutes before shampooing. A medicine dropper can be used to place several drops in the right areas. Rub the drops into your scalp with the fingertips, preferably vigorously enough for the scalp to be reddened a
bit and feel warm. That reddening and warmth is due to histamine release. Then wash it out. Since it is a surfactant, it is a fine principal ingredient for a shampoo. If any gets in your eyes, it will be mildly irritating like most shampoos. It washes out easily with water and will do no harm. You can expect to see new hairs growing within two or three months of daily use
if it is going to work for you. At first, the hairs are very thin and short, best seen under bright side lighting and against a black background.

Average regrowth reported in the scientific literature was over 60 percent for hundreds of men in their 50s and 60s using polysorbate every day for a year. Beware, though, of organizations selling this material at highly inflated prices (such as $25 per ounce) and claiming it is an exclusive
offering. Wholesale cost in 45-gallon drums is about $1 per pound.

This approach is reported as being more effective at promoting hair regrowth than the topical hormone treatments alone, and it has no significant side effects. (For the first week or two there will be an increase in hair loss due to loosening of hairs in resting phase atrophic follicles.)

It is, best when used in conjunction with the topical hormones and nutritional supplements. In our own observations, the polysorbates appear to be useful but less effective than suggested in the reference literature. This may be because few of our bald acquaintances have really used them daily for an extended period. We personally know of one bald-as-a-billiard fellow who regularly used the polysorbate 80 which we supplied who now has a very nice head of curly (albeit somewhat thin) hair. This was achieved without topical hormones or special nutritional supplements. Male
pattern baldness is an aging clock which can sometimes be reset.
