In spring a young squirrel’s fancy turns because the days
are getting longer, and exposure to longer light periods
sets off a chain reaction involving the brain and pituitary
gland, resulting in release of hormones that affect sex
hormone levels and in turn cause the sex glands to enlarge
and produce their sex hormones.

In terms of our sex drive and capacity, it seems all downhill by middle age. But reduced levels of hormones and certain other chemicals made in the brain can be brought back up to more youthful levels. Depressed sex drives can be increased, and sexual orgasms can be prolonged and intensified with a natural nonsteroid hormone.

Sex drive and capacities decline with age. In males, testosterone (the male steroid sex hormone) begins to fall off after the late teens. In females, estrogens (female sex hormones) begin to decline in the 30s and continue to fall until menopause results. After menopause, the reproductive apparatus, including the vagina, shrinks markedly and loses normal function unless estrogen-containing hormone supplements are used.

There are several ways to help maintain sexual capacities
or to possibly increase a depressed sex drive:

Take antioxidant nutrient supplements, such as vitamins
A, E and C, zinc and selenium. Certain cell tracts in the hormone-responsive areas of the sexual apparatus are particularly sensitive to oxidative damage on aging clocks, we think these areas may act as mutation-damage monitors that eventually cause the sex drive to be shut down by biological clocks in both the brain and the testicles or ovaries. Shutting down would prevent defective (mutated) sperm or ova from developing into defective offspring and using valuable scarce parental and kin resources.

When used properly, steroid sex hormone supplements are effective stimulants of sex drive. In addition to increasing the sex drive in both males and females, testosterone increases aggressiveness.

CAUTION: Females may experience side effects such as reversible facial hair growth and irreversible lowering of voice pitch if testosterone is used to excess.

Systemic (all through the body) effects of sex hormone supplements can be minimized by using them in certain chemical forms topically, that is, directly on the penis or vagina. Certain forms of the sex hormones, such as testosterone cypionate and estradiol dipropionate, have relatively little systemic circulation when applied topically in small amounts because the
molecule is too large and nonpolar to move very far very fast. Too much systemic testosterone or estrogen-progestin can reduce levels of the brain hormone LHRH, a natural built-in aphrodisiac, and cause decreased, instead of increased, sex drive; systemic hormones may also facilitate the growth of certain cancers.

The neurotransmitters (chemicals used by the brain’s nerve cells to communicate with each other) associated with primitive drives such as sex include norepinephrine (NE), dopamine, and acetylcholine. Increasing the levels of these brain chemicals may increase sexual interest and activity. The amino acid L-Dopa (a prescription drug) increases brain levels
of both dopamine and NE. Velvet beans (an animal feed used in the southeast) are a food source of L-Dopa. Another dopaminergic stimulant is the prescription drug bromocriptine (Parlodel®, Sandoz). Bromocriptine seems to be able to reset the biological aging clock involved in the regulation of sexual cycling in women and other female mammals. It has reinstated menstruation in some postmenopausal women and experimental animals, as well as seeming to increase their sex drive.

The most common side effect of L-Dopa, bromocriptine, and other dopaminergic stimulants is nausea. This is not a toxic reaction. It is caused by an unusually high level of dopaminergic stimulation in the automatic control circuits of the brain stem. Reducing the dose usually relieves this problem, and gradual dose increases result in tolerance to the nausea-producing effect.
