We have had experience with several antidepressive nutrients and drugs. Phenylalanine, an amino acid found in relatively large amounts in meat, milk, cheese, and some other high protein foods, is a very effective and quick remedy for a wide variety of depressions, including the depressive phase of manic-depressive illness and endogenous, schizophrenic,
and post-amphetamine depression. When doses of 100 to 500 milligrams of pure phenylalanine per day were taken on an empty stomach for two weeks, most depressed people were entirely relieved of their depressions. Faster results can be obtained by taking 1 to 114 grams all at once, provided it is ascertained that there is no hypertension (high blood pressure). A day or two at this dosage may alleviate the depression.

Of course, phenylalanine or any other drug cannot change reality—if a loved one was lost, the loss remains just as real—but phenylalanine can reduce the time to regain the ability to enjoy life once again. L-phenylalanine is the natural precursor for the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine; the increase in the supply of these chemicals is why phenylalanine is antidepressive.

“He’s been that way since being relieved of his starship command for losing to the Klingons.”

Phenylalanine has no toxic side effects to metabolically normal people in normal effective antidepressant dosages. It can cause headaches, insomnia, and/or irritability in excess dosage. Reducing the dosage will eliminate these effects. In large enough dosages (depending on the individual), it can increase blood pressure and, therefore, people with high blood pressure should start at a low dose, say 100 milligrams a day, measuring blood pressure at intervals and increasing the dose gradually. D-phenylalanine has recently been discovered to be an effective treatment in some cases for severe pain, because it inhibits the enzymes that break down your brain’s
natural morphine like pain killers, the enkephalins. In order to maximize the amount entering the brain relative to that in the remainder of the body, phenylalanine should either be taken on an empty stomach just as you go to sleep or immediately when you wake up in the morning, a half hour or
more before breakfast. Using it later in the day is more likely to lead to insomnia.

There are two varieties of phenylalanine you should know about. D-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine are mirror images of each other, like a right- and left-handed glove. The D form, as mentioned above, is effective, in many cases, against severe pain. The L form is effective against depres-
sion. For-use-against depression, then, the L-phenylalanine or DLphenylalanine (a mixture of the two kinds) is usually best.

Vitamins C and B-6-are both required for converting nutrient precursors such as phenylalanine and tyrosine to norepinephrine and dopamine. Note that the amino acid tyrosine is actually one step closer to being a neurotransmitter than phenylalanine. If you do not achieve satisfactory results with C, B-6, and phenylalanine, you might try comparable doses of C, B-6, and tyrosine. The high blood pressure precautions also apply to tyrosine; start at 100 milligrams and increase dosage slowly, while monitoring blood pressure, and do not use with prescription MAO inhibitors. Tyrosine sometimes causes decreases rather than increases in
blood pressure. Tyrosine has also exhibited potent antidepressive effects in human experiments.
