Male pattern baldness is an example of an aging clock. When the time comes, the hair from the affected areas falls out, even if it has been transplanted into a normally nonbalding area of the head. We have learned something about the molecular events that cause balding. Using this knowledge, we can reset the balding aging clock to prevent and even partially reverse it by using the right nutrients and techniques. You
don’t have to go bald any more. You might be able to grow back some of the lost hair.

This post deals only with male pattern baldness, the most common cause of male hair loss, and not with other types of baldness.

CAUTION: Before proceeding with the approach presented here, have your physician give you a complete physical; hair loss can also be due to serious medical disorders such as diabetes mellitus (sugar-insulin diabetes).

Knowledge of how hair follicles produce hair and what causes them to stop is increasing rapidly. We know that hair follicles have a growing and resting cycle. In male pattern balding, the hair follicles in particular areas of the scalp begin to spend more of their time in the resting phase. Meanwhile,
hairs continue to fall out. Eventually, there are no macroscopic normal hairs left in that area. However, the atrophied follicles are not necessarily dead and might be induced to begin growing hair again by using the proper growth stimulants.

Male pattern balding is an example of a biological clock. As mentioned earlier, on aging clocks, if you remove some hairs (along with their follicles) from the balding area and transplant them to a nonbalding area of the
scalp, the transplanted hairs fall out right on schedule, along with the other balding area hairs. If you transplant hairs from a nonbalding area into the balding area, the transplanted hairs continue to grow, while the hairs all around them are falling out. We do not yet know everything about how this aging clock works, but we do know how to slow and possibly reverse the clock.

It is well accepted that dihydrotestosterone, a hormone formed by metabolism of the male hormone testosterone or from cholesterol, causes these follicles to go into their resting phase. When the time comes to go bald, the hair follicles in the male pattern baldness areas markedly increase their production of testosterone 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which in turn makes the hair stop growing. Female hormones topically applied to the scalp in the balding area can prevent further fallout (by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone formation and blocking its receptors) but usually causes little or no regrowth of hair.
In order to avoid other effects of estrogens, such as increased breast growth, you should use topically applied, slowly diffusing forms, such as estradiol cypionate or dipropionate. This can penetrate the scalp to give a high concentration at the follicles, but relatively little estrogen gets into general circulation.

The follicle aging clock of male pattern baldness can also be partially blocked with large doses of testosterone compounds applied directly to the scalp. This both inhibits the formation of dihydrotestosterone (the balding clock compound) and blocks its access to the receptor sites in the DNA
of the follicles. A testosterone salve can greatly slow or even halt the progress of male pattern baldness, but hair regrowth averages only about 10 percent after one year. We recommend that testosterone be applied as the cypionate to reduce systemic effects.
