There isn’t just one aging process, and there isn’t just one way
to retard aging and promote youthfulness. Modern aging research has uncovered considerable information about how
aging happens and about a number of different pathways of
aging damage. We can intervene in many places along these
pathways to slow or partially reverse aging. Unlike most
health books, which claim a single cure for all ills, this book
provides detailed instructions for an extraordinarily wide
range of methods for partially controlling many of the ravages of age. Which of these different alternatives you choose
for yourself depends on your goals and the resources (such as
time and energy) that you wish to devote to achieving a longer and healthier life span.

As we have described, aging is a multidimensional process involving several different aging mechanisms. As a result,
there are many effective and yet different ways to go about
increasing your life span. Some techniques are as simple as
avoiding some activities that shorten your life span, such as
smoking, heavy drinking, or overeating to obesity. Others involve taking certain inexpensive nutrients, such as calcium
pantothenate, that have been shown to have life-extending
capabilities. (Large doses of calcium pantothenate—vitamin
B-5—have extended the life span of mice by 20 percent.)

If you do not wish to alter your lifestyle or your habits,
this need not preclude your taking effective steps to extend
your life span. Many people enjoy drinking and will not be
willing to stop doing so. However, it is possible to reduce the
amount of damage done by the toxic compound acetaldehyde, formed in the liver from the alcohol, by taking appropriate dosages of vitamins C and B-1 and the amino acid cysteine. If you do not want to stop eating fat-rich foods or decrease your intake of them, you can take vitamins C and
E, niacin, and other nutrients to keep down the level of serum lipids (fats and oils in the bloodstream) and help to retard
formation of harmful uncontrolled oxidation products of the
lipids called organic peroxides. These organic peroxides are
mutagens (causing damage to your cells’ DNA, the blueprint
for each cell’s structure and activities) and also carcinogens
(cancer-causing substances) and do other types of damage.

The choice is yours. No one will be interested in using every possible available technique. What you choose to do will
depend on the extent of your interest, knowledge, funds, and
willingness to act. Some people are more conservative than
others. They will obviously have different choices than less
conservative individuals. There is no single “answer” that fits
the needs and desires of everyone.

Although there are a good many alternative therapies
that will probably result in life-span increases, we do not yet
have the choice of entirely stopping aging or entirely reversing aging damage. Such an eventuality is not out of the realm of possibility (at least there seems to be no physical law which precludes it). What is required for an indefinite life span (death caused only by accidents, murder, and suicide) is that the life span be increased by at least one year for every year
lived. This does not seem to be inherently impossible.

How do you decide between different ways of increasing
life span? That depends on benefits versus costs, or, improved
health now and probable increase in life span vs. risks and
costs (including both physiological and financial). Only you
can decide what level of risk you are willing to take—and
what costs you are willing to pay—for what level of increased
life span. Remember, too, that life extension does not just
benefit you at the tail end of life. Techniques that increase life
span improve the quality of life now as well. For example, you
can look more youthful, reduce aches and pains, increase
muscular strength, improve resistance to diseases and stress,
and even increase sexual and mental performance, including
memory and learning capabilities. It is also possible to alter
and control your own moods with the appropriate nutrients.
