There does not seem to be anything in the nature of the reproduction of tissue which demands its death. …

One cause of senility after another will be found and removed,
each resulting in only a minor extension of active life. One
cannot help wondering what will happen if the causes are
all known and found curable. There would be no natural
term of life.

—Sir George Thomson, 1937 Nobel Prize winner

Here are a few examples of results you might notice in a short time by taking life extension nutrients. You don’t have to wait until you’re old to benefit from life extension.

The final proof of the efficacy of an experimental life extension program is, of course, to see how long a follower of that program actually lives. But this may be a very long wait. Consequently, we look at shorter-term changes that may indicate what we can reasonably expect in the long run. With
a well-designed life extension regimen, a number of benefits can be expected in a short time.

Take ARTHRITIS, for example. This is usually an autoimmune disease—when part of your immune system attacks part of you (joint membranes and lubricant fluids) instead of undesirables like bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, you can get arthritis. Such immune system errors in arthritis may in part be due to age-related thymic involution and in part to damage to T-cells caused by free radicals that have been found in arthritic joints. We know that antioxidants (which prevent free radical proliferation) and the proper immune system stimulants can help prevent arthritic attacks. A selection of effective nutrients might include any (preferably all)
of the antioxidant vitamins E, A, C, B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, calcium pantothenate, PABA, inositol, and selenium, zinc, and cysteine (a sulfur-containing amino acid; do not get cystine, which is the oxidized form of cysteine). (The vitamin niacin, B-3, is not itself an antioxidant but it is used in NADPH, one of your body’s natural antioxidants; B-2 is also itself not an antioxidant but is required for the natural antioxidant-recycling enzyme glutathione reductase.) Effective immune stimulant nutrients include C, E, A, selenium, B-1, cysteine, zinc, and arginine or ornithine (amino acids).

Now consider SMOKER’S COUGH. It would be most beneficial, from a life extension standpoint, to stop smoking. But to many people the short-term pleasures and addictive nature of smoking make it unattractive to stop. With proper nutrient supplementation you can get a substantial degree of protection from the damaging effects of smoking (though not 100-
percent protection, as yet). The nutrients C, B-1 (a sulfur-containing vitamin), and cysteine (a sulfur-containing amino acid) have been able to protect rats from doses of the chemical acetaldehyde (found in cigarette smoke and also in smog) that killed 90 percent of the control rats (those that did not receive the nutrient supplements). British investigators have
found that the acetaldehyde in cigarette smoke actually combines with and destroys cysteine. Cigarette smoke also contains free radicals, which have been detected by electronparamagnetic resonance (epr) spectrometry, so the smoke delivers a double molecular-level injury by simultaneously de-
stroying cysteine and introducing pathological free radicals into the tissues. Vitamins A, C, and E and selenium strongly inhibit carcinogenesis, the process whereby normal cells become cancer cells. The symptoms of smokers’ cough can be noticeably alleviated in twenty-four hours with these nutrients. Hydergine® (Sandoz) may be the most powerful antioxidant yet tested. One to three 1-milligram tablets sublingual (held under the tongue) will provide very noticeable smoke protection for your mouth and throat.
