We have good reasons for believing that the near future holds
even more rapid progress in the prevention and reversal of
aging than we have experienced in the past decade. The
amount of information we have about aging and other biological sciences is doubling every five to ten years, meaning
that what we know now is only a small fraction (between
1/16 and 1/4) of what we will know by the year 2050! Each
year that you extend your life with present methods will in-
crease your chances of receiving even greater benefits in the
future. If we can keep ourselves in good condition, we will
have the opportunity in the years to come to help ourselves
with ever more safe and effective methods.

Our present techniques for life extension are limited. We
cannot entirely stop or entirely reverse aging processes. We
can significantly slow many aging mechanisms and can even
partially reverse some of them. But research into better understanding of aging and its control is needed for the complete elimination of aging.

Do we have any reasons to believe that such an ultimate
solution will ever be forthcoming? Yes, we do. The doubling time for knowledge in biological sciences—that is, the amount
of time it takes to roughly double the amount of information
that we now have—is somewhere between five and ten years.
This means that in ten years or less we will know twice as
much as we know now about the biology of aging. In another
ten years or so we’ll know twice as much as we knew ten
years from now, or about four times what we know now. And
so on, as with compound interest. In a reasonably short period
of time, the amount of knowledge available to life extension
scientists will be staggering and will make today’s knowledge
seem minute in comparison. Considering the advances that
have already been made in the control of aging mechanisms
and in extending experimental animals’ life spans, we have
good reason to be optimistic.

It is not necessary to solve completely all aging systems
problems at once. If we can increase our life expectancy by
at least one year for every year we live, we will have an indefinite life span.

Many of the people who are doing productive research
on biological aging are themselves personally interested in
the elimination of aging. There are private foundations involved in supporting these researches whose directors are
looking for answers to their own aging problems. Much private research will continue despite vagaries of government
funding. Such men and women, scientists and lay per-
sons, have the most powerful motivations driving them—a
thirst for knowledge, and a fight for their very lives. Much has
been done already, but there is far more to come.
