One fact about the future of which we can be certain is
that it will be utterly fantastic.

You don’t just want to feel younger, you want to look younger too. So do we. In this post, we tell you how you can slow down the wrinkling of your skin using nutrients you can get at your local health food or drug store. We tell you about your most important natural skin moisturizer and how it can be
used to regain the youthful, plump, moist appearance your skin used to have. And we tell you how oral doses of a natural carotenoid plant pigment can give you a beautiful tan without solar ultraviolet-light-induced skin damage.
Skin is the largest and most visible of all the organs. As aging progresses, the skin shows the results of aging damage by becoming wrinkled and losing its elasticity. Except for UV (ultraviolet light) damage, the aging condition of the skin probably reflects that of the rest of the body. Even here, resistance to UV damage (in the absence of topical UV absorbers) correlates fairly well with resistance to aging damage mechanisms.
We might, therefore, see in this accessible system how well (or not so well) we are dealing with our own aging processes.
The various aging mechanisms damage skin in the same manner as other body systems. Skin is also subject to the damage produced by the ultraviolet light in sunlight. This type of damage does not occur in other parts of the body except the eye. As explained earlier, ultraviolet light causes
uncontrolled cross-linking (undesirable bonds) between protein molecules in skin which can be recognized in the form of wrinkles. (Chemically caused cross-links also occur in arteries, leading to the so-called hardening of the arteries in which these vessels lose their elasticity and become brittle, hard, and stiff.) Ultraviolet light causes the lipids in skin to undergo
several types of free radical damage, including peroxidation and cross-linking addition reactions.
The skin is the third most fatty organ in the body, after the spinal cord and brain, and consequently is particularly susceptible to free radical attack.
Studies have shown that people with a greater exposure to cross-linkers such as alcohol (converted to acetaldehyde in the liver), tobacco smoke (contains aldehydes), and sunlight (contains ultraviolet) are more wrinkled. The greater the exposure, the greater the wrinkling. People who smoke and drink heavily (without protecting themselves with the proper nutrients) usually look old beyond their years. In fact, they have prematurely aged themselves. If you prefer to do these things, perhaps you should try to protect yourself.
As we have seen, the rate of the undesired random damage of cross-linking may be slowed by taking antioxidants such as E, C, cysteine, and B-1. These compounds interfere with the chemical reactions that cause the cross-linking. In order to bring a higher concentration of these materials into the
skin, “miracle” ointments containing some of these compounds are commonly sold. This can be an effective stratagem; however, it is important to know that the shelf life of these ointments is limited because some of the active ingredients—particularly lipids and vitamin E—become inactive or
even harmful in the presence of air, light, heat, and moisture.
The skin may be protected from ultraviolet-light damage rather easily. One way is to stay out of the sun. Another way is to use topical sunscreens containing esters of PABA (p-aminobenzoic acid), a vitamin. These PABA esters dissolve into the skin’s oils and don’t wash out as easily while swimming, from perspiration, etc., as does plain PABA, which is water
soluble. The PABA and its esters absorb the energy from the ultraviolet light, thus shielding the skin and its sensitive molecules (such as DNA) from attack. Large oral doses of PABA are fairly effective, too, though not as thorough as a topical sun block.
