If you feel you cannot get to sleep without a sleeping pill (assuming you cannot find tryptophan), you might want to try taking 4 the normal nightly sleeping pill dose in conjunction with swallowing one to three 1-milligram tablets of Hydergine®, for which you would need a prescription from your
doctor. The total effect has been reported to be a reduction in the requirement of sleeping pill dose along with full sleep- promoting potency, and less sleeping pill hangover in the morning. Do not expect your doctor to have heard of this use for Hydergine®, since this is not an FDA-approved use for this drug; hence Sandoz is forbidden to tell physicians about it.
The practice is safe, however, and is widely used in France, where it was derived from the practice of using both Hydergine® and barbiturates together in preparing patients for surgery. And because many sleep aids (including barbituratesand benzodiazapines) alter sleep patterns , it is
better not to use them at all or to slowly reduce the dose you do use.
WARNING: If you have used benzodiazapines for years, do not suddenly discontinue their use, or death by convulsions can occur. Consult a physician for withdrawal from chronic benzodiazapine use.
There are reports of a few individuals who require almost no sleep, in a few cases as little as fifteen minutes a night. The life styles of some of these people have been studied, especially to determine whether they are sleeping during the day, in short catnaps, or in some way entering the physiological states of sleep without appearing to do so. So far, EKG measurements indicate that there really are a few people who are able
to live seemingly normal lives while sleeping as little as fifteen minutes a night. We have no explanation for this as yet, but they probably have an alternative mechanism of growth hormone release. We would like to see studies of the pituitary temporal release patterns and biochemical releasing mechanisms of growth hormone and vasopressin (the release of
which triggers REM sleep) in these people. Since we spend a third of our lives unconscious while asleep, finding ways to get along without sleep or even cutting it down is a way to extend subjective life span. Although living without sleep would not increase the number of years we live, it would seem to us that we lived many years longer because we would be able to
spend the extra time enjoying life rather than being unconscious.
Some people findthat BHT (an antioxidant food preservative) allows them to reduce sleep time. Phenylalanine (an amino acid found in foods such as meats and cheese and sold in some health food stores) can significantly reduce the requirement for sleep, but watch out for the development of insomnia if you use too much phenylalanine.
Finally, here’s a little experiment you can try with a very safe sleep-affecting drug, vitamin B-12. This vitamin can cause spectacular intensification of colors in dreams or sometimes even produce colors in dreams of people who never before had colored dreams! It works about half the time in the small group of people we know who’ve tried it. (Sometimes the colors are so vivid they can wake you up!) A dose of 1,000
micrograms or so is effective. Take it just as you get into bed to sleep. If you take the B-12 half an hour before bed, the dream-enhancing effect-rarely works. Tolerance to this vitamin effect on dreams develops rapidly. So if you use large doses of B-12 every day, it is rather unlikely that this effect
will occur.
