… Spontaneous mutations, cancer, and aging can be
looked upon as a result of continuous “internal radiation”
while these same processes produced by external radiation
are largely the result of an increment in the amount of
total “radiation” to which the organism is exposed.
—Dr. Denham Harman, originator of the free radical
theory of aging
Free radical pathology is as important an advance in
medicine as Pasteur’s germ theory of disease.
—Dr. Harry Demopoulos
Everyone knows that high-energy radiation is dangerous. It can cause mutations, cancer, atherosclerosis, cross-linking (loss of tissue elasticity), brain damage, immune system damage, etc. In fact, this is also a list of damage caused by aging. The similarity is not coincidental. Nearly all high-energy radiation causes its damage by creating dangerous, highly reactive chemicals called free radicals. Unfortunately, we cannot escape free radical damage by avoiding radiation, because chemical reactions in our bodies create free radicals too.
Some of these are normal and necessary, but others are pathologic and cause damage. In fact, the people downwind of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor accident were damaged more by their own natural biochemically produced free radicals than by free radicals from the escaping radiation. Ordinary air on a sunny day contains about 1,000,000,000 (one billion) hydroxyl free radicals (the most dangerous. type of free radical) per quart of air. That’s the bad news. The good news is that certain nutrients are very effective in destroying pathologic free radicals—in fact, that seems to be the only function of vitamin E. Here is how to control your own free radicals, thereby protecting yourself from both radiation (internal and external) and aging, at the same time.
The tiniest killer isn’t a virus. It is a type of promiscuously reactive molecule or molecular fragment called a free radical. Since your life depends on very careful control of the chemical reactions within you, free radicals can be deadly.
Free radicals are chemically reactive molecules your body has to handle every day. Some free radicals are necessary participants in certain normal metabolic reactions. Here, your body supplies enzymes which control the free radicals so that they don’t escape to do damage elsewhere. The enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase are
two of these free radical control substances made in your body. Without these enzymes, you would quickly die. In fact, all air-breathing life on our planet must have such enzymes to survive.
High-energy radiation kills by generating free radicals in living organisms. In our bodies, the most important sources of free radicals which cause aging damage include the abnormal oxidation and breakdown of fats in your body, the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide produced in your body, and free radicals which escape from normal metabolism. They are almost
everywhere.
Uncontrolled, these free radicals can damage proteins, fats, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA, the master and working copies of your genetic blueprints) in your body. We have control systems for free radicals which include enzymes and also natural free radical scavengers like vitamins C and E. But these cannot control the free radicals perfectly. Some of them do escape and cause damage, which accumulates over the years.
