How ironic, that writers often refer to people being ‘freed’
by death!—when in fact death is the complete, the
absolute absence of freedom, since both power and will
are reduced to nil.
—R.C.W. Ettinger, Man into Superman
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
—Dylan Thomas
Every now and then you may wonder, “Why isn’t everybody
interested in increasing the length and quality of life?” But
of course not everybody is. And there are many reasons for
this lack of interest. Here we’ve put together a little list of reasons why some people will not try to cancel their appointment with death—or will wait until it’s too late.
Why people might want to die on schedule (the tradition-
al three score and ten years):
- They are in physical or mental pain.
- They’re bored or depressed.
- They “believe” in death (it’s part of a traditional
worldview, such as “If it’s natural, it must be good”). - They aren’t having any fun.
- They’re resigned because “nothing can be done about
it.”
- Science frightens them, a la Frankenstein.
- They believe in reincarnation or other “life after
death.” - They have a big investment in planning their lives by
assuming death at a certain point. - They may find it less unpleasant to know approximately when they will die than not to know.
- They may be crazy.
- They wonder what it’s like.
- All their friends want to.
